The Challenge of Putting into Practice
Spiritual growth is a two-part process: first we learn new ideas and values, then we put them into practice. Needless to say, it's easier to HAVE a bright idea than to APPLY it in real life. That's because our egoic habits and tendencies resist what is high and bright and beautiful. Consequently, we may find that we implement only when we are forced to -- either by outer circumstances (such as the expectations or needs of others), or by inner compulsions (such as strong inspiration, or nagging guilt). The problem with relying on compelling forces to motivate us is, our resistance is only TEMPORARILY overcome. Ultimately, in order to exercise real integrity, and in order to live a truly enlightened life, we must learn to do what we know is right WILLINGLY and FREELY -- with or without compulsion of any kind.
