Especially when our thinking is suspicious and fearful, our best thoughts aren't all that lofty. Disillusionment helps turn us to God, but often in a troubled -- and therefore unreceptive -- condition. It is not surprising, then, that distrusting people have good reason to distrust themselves and their judgments. The mess that human life is in -- the alienation, the loneliness, the despair, the dysfunction of relationship, the alienation even between couples, the failure and inability to get along properly, the lack of social harmony, the lack of security in relationship -- ALL OF IT results from the best thought of society at large, and the individuals that comprise it. Not a good track record for trusting ourselves!
